Why Third-Party Testing and COAs Matter

How to read a Certificate of Analysis critically, including product identity, batch references, methods, dates and the limits of reported results.

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) records results for a stated sample and a defined set of tests. When reviewing one, check the product name, batch or lot number, test method, reported result, laboratory identity and report date. Confirm that the document refers to the material in question. A COA does not automatically verify every quality attribute, prove that all batches are equivalent, or establish suitability for a specific use. Keep documentation with the relevant records and ask for clarification where details do not match.
